Things to do
Gorges de l'Ardeche and Pont d'Arc
Take the scenic drive along the top of the gorge from Vallon Pont d'Arc to St Martin.
Alternatively, canoe or hike the length of the gorge from some really spectacular views.
Grotte Chauvet
The Grotte Chauvet is home to the oldest prehistoric cave art yet discovered in Europe. It is possible to visit a replica of the stunning cave paintings at the Grotte Chauvet 2.
Aven d'Orgnac and other caves
Admire the stalagtites and stalagmites in the impressive Aven d'Orgnac. This cave has been granted the label Grand Site de France.
La Grotte de la Salamandre opened a few years ago and is a beautiful example of the caves typical of the area.
The Aven Marzal is another fantastic cave. Kids will also love the prehistoric "zoo" here.
Cultural Ardeche
Visit the Chateau des Roures in nearby Labastide de Virac for a glimpse into the way of life of the Huguenots and the history of silk-making in the region. (Les Lauriers Roses was originally a "magnanerie", a house used for raising silkworms!)
There are many pitoresque villages within an easy drive:Barjac, Vogüe, Balazuc, Aigeze, Labeaume...
Further afield, you will find a wealth of Roman and other historic monuments: the Pont du Gard, the Arena in Nimes and the Papal palace in Avignon, to name just a few...
Outdoor pursuits in the Ardeche
Ardeche with young kids
Kids will love going to the "beach" at the many bathing spots along the Ardeche, Ceze, Chassezac and Labeaume rivers.
They will also enjoy the Parc Animalier, just down the road, between Brujas and Vagnas.
