The Grotte Chauvet is home to the oldest prehistoric cave art yet discovered in Europe. The stunning cave paintings have until now been inaccessible to the public. However, a replica cave is opening its doors near Vallon Pont d'Arc from April 2015.
Admire the stalagtites and stalagmites in the impressive Aven d'Orgnac. This cave has been granted the label Grand Site de France.
La Grotte de la Salamandre opened a few years ago and is a beautiful example of the caves typical of the area.
The Aven Marzal is another fantastic cave. Kids will also love the prehistoric "zoo" here.
Visit the Chateau des Roures in nearby Labastide de Virac for a glimpse into the way of life of the Huguenots and the history of silk-making in the region. (Les Lauriers Roses was originally a "magnanerie", a house used for raising silkworms!)
There are many pitoresque villages within an easy drive:Barjac, Vogüe, Balazuc, Aigeze, Labeaume...
Further afield, you will find a wealth of Roman and other historic monuments: the Pont du Gard, the Arena in Nimes and the Papal palace in Avignon, to name just a few...
Kids will love going to the "beach" at the many bathing spots along the Ardeche, Ceze, Chassezac and Labeaume rivers.
They will also enjoy the Foret des Jeux near St Remeze and visiting the lama farm (situated on the scenic gorge route).
Further afield, at Pierrelatte, is one of the largest crocodile farms in Europe!
